Spring 2016 Newsletter

Posted on July 01, 2016

We had a busting spring at CNG, including certifying a record-breaking 120 farms in 4 months. We're also pleased to launch two new certifications! Not subscribed to our newsletter yet? Click here to get our quarterly updates.

We hope your season is off to a great start,

Spring Growth - Ten Dozen New Members!

So far this year, a whopping 120 farmers and beekeepers have had their applications to CNG accepted (from the pool of 270 applications we've received in 2016). They represent a 16% growth in membership since late 2015! As most of these farmers work toward full certification, we're delighted to feature below the 42 new members who have completed all the certification steps since late January. Note the bumper crop of new members from Arkansas, Georgia (as usual), and Alabama!

Our growth means more farmers are receiving peer support to maintain high standards, and more customers have verification. A big thanks go to the CNG Ambassadors contributing to our outreach.

Aquaponic Produce Certification

In February CNG launched a new certification program tailored for aquaponic producers. Aquaponics farms raise fish with plants in a closed loop system. These innovative farms can provide their communities with fresh produce year round in a wide range of conditions: deserts, cold northern climates, and urban settings.

We are delighted to be supporting the entrepreneurs behind this emerging form of sustainable agriculture. Learn more at CNGfarming.org/aquaponics

Mushroom Certification

Thanks to everyone who commented on CNG's draft Mushroom Standards. Our new program will address production practices for both indoor and outdoor mushroom operations. We were thrilled to launch it in June!

You can now apply for mushroom certification here on our website! Please forward to any mushroom producers you know.

Marketing for Farmers

Having a good website is one of the best things you can do to boost your farm's credibility and online visibility. With today's tools and services, it's easier than ever, so we created a step-by-step guide on How to Build a Website for your farm.

Already have a website? Great! Focus instead on getting your local media to publish a story about your farm or market. Local papers are always looking for content, and spring is a particularly good time to pitch a story about your farm. Click here for our lesson on How to Write a Press Release. And if you get a story published, let us know!

Banner Design by CNG

Are you ready to put your best foot forward at the farmers markets? Treat yourself to a nice fresh banner for your farm, and let us design it for you! Get started here.

Special Offer: The first seven people to order a banner design are eligible for free business card design. Simply post a photo of your new banner in action on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter, and tag CNG so we know you did! We'll design some good looking cards according to your specs, and to match your banner.

CNG farmers have generously funded our Scholarship program since 2011, with excellent results. Many farmers who hit a rough patch, or who were just getting started a few years ago, are on a strong footing today thanks in part to the help they received covering their certification dues.

Yet our funds have been depleted by all the qualified applicants. Please chip in to the Scholarship Fund if you're able. Your generous contribution will help cover certification costs for beginning farmers and those facing unusual hardships, like extreme weather, big health care costs, or crop loss. Thank you!

Welcome to New Members:
